Every so often, some consider getting customized license plates, whether to be special like everyone else or simply to be humorous. There's definitely nothing wrong, but there are several things one should keep in mind about custom license plates.
Most expect approval on car
Car and Driver recently printed an article on its site, featuring an interview with Melanie Stokes, a member of the Word Committee, part of the VA Department of Motor Automobiles. The Word Committee's title, as Car and Driver notes, has some Orwellian overtones to its title, naturally, but its task is to approve customized license plates submitted by Virginians for adornment on their vehicles.
There are 50 Word Committees, and Virginia's is just one of those. All of the committees are in charge of approving the words before a custom license plate can be used.
Trying to get by
You probably will not do too well if you make an effort to be clever with the state DMV since you do not get to put whatever you need on your car. A lot of people think that the person who is paying the car finance company should be able to put whatever they want on the car, but that is not how things work.
Esquire explained that every state has its own set of rules and banned phrases for license plates, though you can review the list of banned words anytime you like so you do not have to be concerned about getting your plate turned down. Even if you think the plate is really cute or means something special to you, the DMV can turn it down.
The rules of what's allowed and what is not naturally varies and could be totally arbitrary; for example, according to the Baltimore Sun, the Maryland DMV ruled a personalized plate reading "TOILET" was banned, but one reading "THEPUKE" was not. Likewise, "PIMP" was banned and "FATPIMP" was not.

People might also go through the work of getting their license plate decision overturned if they are already willing to pay the plate fees for the plate. Mistakes occur in some committees, so a person can always appeal the decision if they think their plate should have been allowed.
There are bad things that can occur with the individualized plates though, according to Yahoo. One man, Danny White, gets tickets each month for cars in many different states that do not have identification to them because his plates say "NO TAGS." This is just one of the possible consequences.
